Matt Stellingwerf – Luna @ Q Theatre

A healthy dose of self-deprecation was nicely balanced out with some friendly self big-uppance as Matt Stellingwerf too the ‘stage’ at the Luna @ Q Theatre.

Now famous for it’s toilet slash green room, Matt made light of the fact that you have to be pretty shit to be named best newcomer two years in a row. His hour show ‘All Of The Above’ is twice as long as he’s ever written comedy for.

With historic socio political facts peppered throughout, the incredibly witty, yet dude-next-door kicked off his new show. He balanced hilariously on a wire around personal anecdotes and ripe 90’s kid references.

Sellingwerf was sometimes utterly filthy, other times he was undeniably lovable. His references are far and wide, with everything from Anne Frank to Cougars, getting a going over. Ridiculously convoluted comparisons were a highlight, as Matt bought everything together with well-timed jabs. His tone, at times made the audience pause, but then appreciate with raucous appeal.

The Laughs were constant and varied, and if this is his early career, it’s a promising one worth seeing now and watching out for in the future. Here’s hoping he’ll break out of the new comer next year to be the next big Kiwi comedian.

You can see Matt Stellingwerft at Luna @ Qtheatre until 17 May at 8.30pm.
