48 Hour Film Grand National Finals

Last night the Civic Theatre was a buzz with hopeful finalist of the Rialto Channel 39  48 Hour Film Competiton. The evening was MC’d wonderfully by Josh Thomson, who was hilarious throughout the night and really dictated a great fun atmosphere into proceedings.

There was also a surprise visit from What We Do In The Shadows team Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement who gave us a sneak peek at their new film as well as presenting some awards.

This brilliant competition gives film makers, amateurs and professionals and even school teams, the opportunity to take on the challenge to make a film in just 48 hours. Each team was given a genre, the line ‘not with that you’re not’ and they needed to include the use of a prop and a ball.

It’s hard to describe how high the standard of the films submitted. Over 700 films entered with 14 finalists shown on the night. Brilliant cinematography, editing and scripts accompanied brilliant actors.

Along with the three top winners the stand out films for me where: Flicker, a time travel story with a horror twist, Mi Amigo Mandarina, a against the clock love story between a man and his goldfish and hilarious horror animation Dead End Job.

The Grand National Champion was Lense Flare with Pants On Fire a musical based around a fire brigade.
Runner Up  from Noise and Pictures  was a brave film called Rubble showing trapped victims of an earthquake. Finally there was the Runner Runner Up from team Mexico  A Lesson on Probability about a young boy wishing to impress a pretty girl. Check out the three big winners below.
