Shadowland – Civic Theatre
Auckland was given the gift of Shadowland last night by Pilobolus Dance Theatre at The Civic Theatre.
The show of shadows, illusions, fairytale and dance is a dreamlike magical experience. Remember those James Bond silhouettes? Well imagine if they’d transformed into airplanes, elephants, the sea or even a Centaur.
The main protagonist is a teenage girl who, after being dressed in the best way EVER, gets thrown into a world of shadows and adventure. A perfect projection for the intense and confused mind of a teenager. It’s a coming of age tale like no other.
What followers is a beautiful, and sometimes comical tale, that allows for the extremely effective storytelling vehicle of shadows and imagination to take hold.
The cast may make you feel hugely inferior as they glide around the stage with their fabulous physiques. They are able to be both incredibly powerful and almost completely silent on the stage. The dexterity by which this production is able to perform is truly phenomenal.
The accompanying original score from David Poe is surprisingly varied and eclectic. A perfect balance of drama, passion and care free adventure.
Although this type of theatre may not appeal to all, I doubt anyone wouldn’t admire it’s ability to combine such original arts and synchronise so perfectly.
The Shadowland cast also treated us to a special tribute after the performance so make sure you stay in your seats!
Shadowland is a unique piece of dance theatre with creativity oozing out of every pore.
You can see Shadowland at The Civic until 8 June.
