Ed Byrne Roaring Forties Review

Ed Byrne’s Roaring Forties opened at Q Theatre’s Rangatira last night, and roar we did! (sorry it was right there!).

Ed Byrne is now a veteran of the stand up comedy scene, and getting comfortable in his 40 something persona. In fact, he may have finally grown into his old gitness.

However, his energy means he is as sprightly as any twenty something up on stage. He leaps and jumps his skinny frame around the space with impish abandon.

Ed’s material covers the everyday experiences of a family man who has fought back part of his personality for years, the fact that he has a constant need to be a dick all the time since hitting 40. This inability to self-censor provides for many an witty anecdote!

Byrne doesn’t let you get too comfortable, as he has a dark comedic side. I loved how lots of his material just snuck up on you with a jolt. We soon realised that things were going to be rather unpredictable.

It’s very reassuring to be in the company of a comedian who is comfortable enough to make everything feel so easy. He even questions us favouring one joke over another when he believes one be far more superior.

Guaranteed to entertain, Ed Byrne Roaring Forties is on at Q Theatre Sat 9 May, 9pm & Sun 10 May, 7pm and touring nationwide.
