Independent comedy venue Montecristo Comedy was born just in time for the NZ International Comedy Festival 2015. The cheeky spawn of local comics Jesse Griffin, Guy Williams, Guy Montgomery, Brendon Green and Tim Batt, the venue immediately made its mark, hosting 17 different shows during the festival, selling an estimated 6,500 tickets and receiving the 2015 Spirit of the Festival Award.
Montecristo Comedy returns for a second glorious year, this time with 21 shows featuring local favourites (including those listed above), emerging talents, and internationals Tessa Waters (Australia), Alexis Dubus (UK), Wilson Dixon (USA) and El Jaguar (Mexico).
Producer Jesse Griffin says he’s super excited that the Montecristo is back for its second year. “It’s been an icon of the Auckland music and events scene for years and it feels great to be bringing a whole new audience to it. Winning the Spirit of the Festival award in 2015 was testament to the quality of the shows we had on offer and the atmosphere created by having comedy where it belongs – underneath a pizza restaurant. Its extremely reassuring knowing that a beer and a slice of pizza are only seconds away.”
“We’ve got a fantastic line up of acts this year: brilliant international acts and established NZ ones, some great line up shows of emerging NZ comics and a late night programme of interesting formats for that raucous and unpredictable late night experience.”
Montecristo Comedy kicks off the festival a day early with Montecristo Opening Showcase on Thursday 21 April, featuring pizza, beer and a showcase of hilarious comics performing at the venue, and runs through until Saturday 14 May.
