As You Like It review

New Zealanders seem to really love Shakespeare. Not only is the hugely successful Pop-Up Globe returning later in the month, but this week sees the Outdoor Summer Shakespeare Festival in full swing for its 54th year with a modern and irreverent take on the Bard’s classic comedy, As You Like It.

Effectively an early ‘romantic-comedy’, As You Like It follows heroine Rosalind and her cousin Celia as they cast off their former royal lives in search of love. The original text is funny, fast and has moments of genuine heart – a hard task to adapt adequately on stage, especially when dealing with Auckland’s questionable summer weather.

Staged on the grounds of the University of Auckland, this production keeps aspects of a traditional Shakespearian performance but is heavily updated for younger audiences and those unfamiliar with the original text. At the more traditional end, the production is performed outdoors and utilizes a minimalist set design. At the, err, less traditional end are some upbeat musical numbers and an array of unusual and time-bending costumes.

Costuming, props and acting are at the forefront and these are the most important ways to communicate with the audience. Luckily, leads Francesca Savige (Rosalind) and New Zealander Jessie Lawrence have obvious chemistry on stage and their talents are showcased throughout. It was also nice to see some impromptu and interactive elements as well, allowing the script’s humour to shine. The supporting cast all get their moment in the limelight, and it was enjoyable to see them engage with the audience so well.

Personally, I didn’t overly enjoy the music numbers. I found them to be a bit a bit of place, and a bit long, but they were undeniably fun and helped bring ‘Glastonbury to Auckland’, as was the goal of the production. Most of my other complaints are minor and can most likely be put down to first-night technical issues which I’m sure will be ironed out. The show started late, intermission dragged on forever – especially when you’re sitting in a flooded seat – and as such the show finished over the 3-hour mark.

However, director Ben Henson has put together a well-produced and executed production, both artistically and creatively. It’s by no means traditional, but has its heart is in the right place and benefits from an excellent ensemble cast. As You Like It is well worth the price of admission – but remember to bring an umbrella or a blanket if it’s a wet, cold ‘Summer’ night.
