The Hitman’s Bodyguard Review

The Hitman’s Bodyguard is an action comedy starring A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson and is directed by Patrick Hughes. Triple-A rated executive protection agent or bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds) is called upon to guard the life of his mortal enemy, one of the world’s most notorious hitmen, Darius Kincaid (Jackson). Kincaid is scheduled to give evidence against one of the world’s most evil dictators, Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman), at The Hague. But, with every mercenary and hired-killer after them, will Kincaid and Bryce make it to International Court of Justice in time?

There is some nice action that’s pretty well directed by Red Hill helmer Hughes, however, it’s the chemistry between Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds is what really makes this film an enjoyable watch. This mismatched buddy comedy has many influences including the 80’s classic Midnight Run, even giving it a musical homage during one particular scene. But sadly, the plot feels a little cliché and there are no real surprises as you can see every twist and turn coming. The phenomenal Gary Oldman is sadly wasted in his role as the evil dictator Dukhovich. Salma Hayek exiles as the foul-mouthed wife of hitman Kincaid and I found her thoroughly amusing throughout.

Hitman’s Bodyguard is fun nonsense that will keep action fans happy with belly laughs being an added bonus. Reynolds and Jackson are great on screen together and keep the kills and quips coming thick and fast.
