Win!! Jay Laga’aia is giving away a double pass to Peter Pan Goes Wrong at The Civic

Peter Pan Goes Wrong is a hilarious take on a strained production trying to tell a classic tale as best they can.

The play thrusts us into the world of the latest production from the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society. If you saw last year’s The Play That Goes Wrong you’ll have an idea what to expect here.

Prior to curtain up, there were various kerfuffles around the aisles and on and off the stage as the cast start to make sure everything is ready for their big opening night. When things kick off, it’s one hilarious disaster after another. Classic slapstick, prop mishaps, costume malfunctions and major set fails all feature in what becomes a calamity of joyous deterioration of both the actors and the set.

The laughs are almost continuous throughout with only a small dip in momentum during the first half. Things culminate with an excellently choreographed piece of chaotic theatre that is brilliant in both its execution and it’s entertainment value.

The performers never lose their energy and are all brilliant – including Kiwi actor Jay Laga’aia as both the Narrator and a pirate. But a standout performance has to go to Connor Crawford who plays director and actor Chris Bean. He battles through many an on-stage misfortune with his ‘the show must go’ on mentality to just about make it through to the end of his ‘triumphant’ show. And, Luke Joslin, as Robert Grove, wins fans early on in the play during his stint as Nana the dog. He continues to delight as Starkey and his contribution as co-assistant director (this is a point of contention between himself and Chris).

The fast-paced Peter Pan Goes Wrong is full of accidental excellence and is the perfect antidote to any stressful day. It’s family fun and the perfect way to kick off the silly season.

The show is playing in Auckland at The Civic Theatre until 18 November then it’s onto Wellington’s Opera House 21 – 25 November and Christchurch’s Isaac Royal Theatre28 November – 2 December.
